Swine Information Day set for Feb. 1

MOSES LAKE — Registration is open for the annual Washington Swine Information Day, scheduled for Feb. 1 at Pillar Rock Grill in Moses Lake. The meeting is sponsored by Washington State University Extension and the Washington Pork Producers.
Information sessions begin at 9 a.m., with the WPP annual meeting and dinner at 5 p.m. The annual WPP luncheon is at 12:30 p.m., with Chris Hostetler, director of animal sciences for the National Pork Board, as the speaker. Hostetler is a former WSU professor and WSU Swine Center manager. He will talk about research priorities for the National Pork Board and give an update on the board’s activities.
Hostetler is the keynote speaker at the 9 a.m. session, and will talk about “new technologies in animal production,” including “the impact of gene editing, cultured meat and other new technology,” according to the event brochure.
“The morning topics will focus on new technology and emerging issues in the swine industry,” the event brochure said. “Current issues around swine diseases in the U.S. and worldwide, and swine market trade and outlook also will be addressed.”
Hostetler’s discussion of new technology leads off the meeting. That’s followed at 10 a.m. by a review of the 2019 economic outlook for the swine industry by Shannon Neibergs, livestock economist with WSU Extension.
Members of the WSU Student Swine Cooperative will talk about the program at 11:10 a.m. Veterinarian Susan Kerr, educational specialist with the Washington Department of Agriculture, will talk about “Disease Concerns and Biosecurity” for pork producers. Her presentation is at 11:40 a.m.
“Parasite Prevention and Control” is the subject at 1:30 p.m. The presenter is Doug Jasmer, professor of veterinary microbiology and pathology at WSU. At 2:30 p.m., Hosteler will talk about “Reproduction 101” for swine producers, artificial insemination and natural reproduction, swine birth and piglet care.
A “rapid fire update” is scheduled for 3:50 p.m. Hostetler will talk about PIN tags and when they are required, while Paul Kluber will talk about the Youth for Quality Care of Animals program. Kluber also will review the 2018 “Bourbon and Bacon” event. Tom Cocking will talk about a direct marketing workshop.
